Princess Cays

Our last stop was in Princess Cays in the Bahamas. Our shore excursion here was a workout. We rented aqua bikes? Has anyone reading this rode these things? We had 30 minutes to ride these aqua bikes in the crystal clear frigid blue waters of the Bahamas. Within the first minute on this water gym, both our legs and feet were extremely tired. If you want one heck of a workout, get an aqua bike. If you look closely to the right side of the above photo, you will see an aqua bike. The tree is blocking the right rear wheel. At this island, there were plenty of non motorized water sport activities, little air-conditioned cabanas, plenty of lounge chairs, plenty of beaches, and lots of little tiki bars.

Princess Cruise Lines also set up an outside barbeque which was well-deserved by the passengers. This island is supposedly 200 miles long and 2 miles wide. I think the 2 mile wide statistic may be off a bit, but who’s measuring? This was a real hot day, but excellent for the beach.

What a view!

After Joyce and I ate at the barbeque, we headed back on the ship. She went to get a massage as I just took a nap in our cabin. At 8 pm that night, we watched Movies Under The Stars until 1:30 am. We watched The Blind Side and Avatar. Both were good movies. We now return to Fort Lauderdale. Princess could do a little better on organizing the final disembarkation as they did a great job doing that with the shore excursions.

Cozumel, Mexico

From the pier

Cozumel was a pretty cool place to visit. Once again, of course, the port was commercialized and actually so was downtown. I deem it as one big Bealls Outlet. Most people here did speak English. Our tour excursion here was swimming and snorkeling with sting rays. This is something I never really planned on doing, but surprisingly was quite fun. Our first encounter with the sting rays was to feed them fish and squid. Sting rays suck their food down like a vacuum cleaner. It was awkward but neat. They are also like cats when they mark you. They ram into your legs, but I believe they did this because they knew they were getting food. This excursion was once again educational from the start and a great thing about this was Joyce and I were the only two people on this excursion. We almost thought it was a scam, but it wasn’t. We do have a cd photo album we bought and I will put up some of the better photos on my photo gallery page. Afterwards, we went shopping downtown.

Me and my sombrero

Joyce bought the kids bracelets and a very nice colorful sombrero. I wore the sombrero back to the ship and I definitely received a lot of attention. While we were there, we tried out the McDonalds. Their McDonalds was actually very nice, much better than I have seen in the U.S. I have seen others across the world and so far this is the nicest. The food did taste a little weird though.

Roatan, Honduras

Island Paradise

This was the most scenic panoramic view of every port we stopped. This is a postcard’s paradise. In Roatan, Joyce and I decided to do a cruisetour through a botanical garden with monkeys and free flying McCaws during what felt like 95 degree weather. Our tour guide was excellent as there were about 14 of us in the group and we all rode in a van to another part of the island of Roatan. I learned a lot that I didn’t know about this area of the world. This is one of those field trips every student should take. It was fun and educational and that is how most people learn. As we drove to our destination, we could see the poor areas of the island. For example, we saw a guy cutting weeds from a massive hill on the side of the road with a machede. We could have easily used a lawnmower or weedeater to do this. When we arrived at our destination, we were briefed with rules, then headed into the garden. Take a look at some photos below or in the photo section of this site. Joyce held a monkey and it started to play with her sunglasses (after clearly reading a sign that said don’t let the monkey play with your sunglasses). I held the monkey as well. I think he likes me.

Anyone see the resemblance?

We also had a McCaw on our shoulder. As you can see in the photo, we had a bird’s eye view. An interesting fact about Roatan is that the color of houses is their address. Afterwards, we went down to the beach, but Joyce wanted to get back on the ship so we never swam in Honduras. We took a lot of pictures in Honduras, which I believe were the best takes. We took both beautiful photos and photos of the poor areas where one can get a sense of the true factor of a poor economy. You can view these in the photo gallery page.

Yes, it was a hot day.

Grand Cayman

I enjoyed this island. Many people from the cruise went to a place called seven mile beach where the waters are emerald and blue. It’s excellent for scuba and snorkeling. Joyce and I took a snorkeling tour where we could see a shipwreck. Well, it was a ship that was hauled back that did wreck, but was blown up in the sea. We saw the blown up part, which was very interesting.
This shore excursion cost us $40 each. After exiting the ship, we walked a few meters to the boat that took us out. A guy from Canada and North Carolina were the captains of this small boat. I guess you caould call it a North American shore

Snorkel Time

excursion in Grand Cayman. We stopped at a small reef from 12-60 ft deep in certain areas. I have snorkeled many times and this was probably the best from seeing all the varieties of colorful fish. The guys were humorous and it was a fun trip. We also saw Tarpon lying at the bottom of the sea floor. I would recommend this tour to any beginning snorkeler as the salt content along with a life jacket will make you float. I don’t know if snorkeling at seven mile beach or any other beach on the Grand Caymans is just the same, but I will let you know when I return.

Princess Cruise Line (Crown Princess)

Upon entrance into this massive ship, we headed to our room with somewhat confusion. There weren’t that many people telling us where to go. It didn’t take long though. Our room was an inside cabin since it was free. It had a mini bar and fridge, 4 twin beds, a desk, a closet, a safe, a decent little bathroom, a dresser, and a flatscreen tv. Within 45 minutes, I was invited to take a tour of the ship and Joyce, my wife, took her own tour. I did know the ship slightly better because of the tour, but we didn’t go everywhere. After the tour, the whole ship had to do a lifejacket safety briefing. Our first stop was Grand Cayman, but that was a day and a half away. We left on Saturday from Fort Lauderdale, a day at sea formal night on Sunday, and arrived in Grand Cayman Monday Morning. In this post, I am going to write the positives and negatives about the cruise line and the cruise.

Positives:
There are a variety of things to do. They have what is called a “Princess Patter” that is delivered to your stateroom on a daily basis listing times and places of things to do. Each place was hosted by one of the crew members.

If you have kids, you never have to see them if you don’t want to until bedtime.

Movies Under The Stars – this is a great concept; from 8pm or so, a popular movie is played on a big screen while you sit in comfy lounge chairs under the stars.

Easy disembarkation at the ports.

Free laundry. (this was b/c I was an elite member)

Our cabin attendant was timely and extremely efficient. The service this guy provided was the best service from an employee of any kind – ever. Plus, he always had a positive attitude.

4 pools, one being an adult only area with a small current to swim against. It was quite easy.

A large fitness room.

Liquor was decent and occasionally at a good price.

Continuously free pizza and ice cream.

Shore excursions were very convenient and not a bad price either.

Excellent shows and comedy.

Formal Night

Negatives:

On Sunday morning when we woke up, we woke up to a strange noise. It was our toilet overflowing into our cabin. It took a few minutes for us to contact someone, but eventually we did. Our carpet was soaked and our bathroom was filled with water. We went to breakfast and by the time we came back, they sucked up all the water or replaced the carpet.

The charge of 10.50 per person per night for tips.

They include gratuity on every drink you buy, then ask for gratuity on the receipt.

Speaking of drinks, soda was expensive and few drinks were complimentary.

ATM was a $6.00 fee. This was the highest I have seen.

Casino? Ugh…. You have to use your cruise card to cash out of the machines instead of getting cash or a ticket. We did not like this at all. At the end of the cruise, Joyce won over $400 on Let It Ride. Slot, Texas Holdem, and Blackjack Tournaments were high buy ins for a small prize. This casino is more greedy than most. We didn’t like the concept of it.

I must also mention that I enjoyed each destination and will explain each below, but I really didn’t feel we were in other parts of the world. I have been to a few different countries before, and I really didn’t feel as if I was out of Florida, where I live. For example, when we disembarked from the ship in both Honduras and Mexico, the port, of course, was commercialized. In other words, I can find the same stuff in Florida for the exact same price, yet people go here to shop. The true shopping areas are not near portside, but in local markets. Cozumel is 80% tourism so you probably won’t find “true” markets. Did they have good deals? Of course, but I wouldn’t take a cruise there to shop. The best thing to do is to get out of the touristy areas and into the heart of the cities. Meet locals, get to know them, and get a real feel of where you are. I really did enjoy this cruise. The positives do outweigh the negatives. However, I soon must compare to other companies. Princess is a good cruise line with superior service. My suggestion with Princess is to do an Alaskan or Norwegian cruise with a balcony if you’re from the south and a Carribean cruise if you’re from the north. As someone said on the ship, “if you don’t have fun, shame on you.”

Royal Caribbean

Always competing with Carnival, Royal Caribbean is a massive ship with extraordinary amenities. They pride themselves on being able to iceskate in the Caribbean and Rock climbing amongst other things. This is also a great ship to take for 3-5 days to the Bahamas or Caribbean islands. More to come from this ship….if you would like to reserve a cruise with Royal Caribbean and get all the information from a knowledgeable cruiseline travel agent, then email me at info@thetravellingtravelagent.com.

Carnival

I do know and can sell you cruises on all cruise lines; however, I’m not going to pretend I have been on them and they’re the greatest thing ever, although they may be. I have been on two Carnival ships, the Sensation and the Inspiration. Describing these ships as awesome is an understatement. I saw these ships in Port Canaveral, Florida on a FAM trip for my travel agency. I rode a bus from Orlando staying at the Renaissance next to Sea World, also amazing. Sadly, I have never been on a real cruise. There is more to do on these ships than things to do in my hometown for both kids and parents. This is probably true of any cruise ship, though. If you have been on a Carnival Cruise Ship, let me know about it. Did you enjoy the cruise, the destination, what? I’ll let you know when I actually get to disembark on one of these incredible ships.
